Party Time

No, not like that time when you danced on the table, but a party nonetheless.

“Because I’m up.”

“I’m so glad you did, because I can’t tell you how much I need this and I really needed to speak to someone. I never thought that anyone would answer. But I decided to dial the phone.”

“Well, if I’m available, I’ll take the call.”

I took her order and we got it out first thing the next morning so she could have it the next day. And as mothers, we get so emotional on our children’s birthdays and we think that if we don’t have that set of cupcake rings then it’s just going to be the end of the world because our child really wants them.

And even thought it’s not the end of the world, at that moment, it’s what matters. And so I can’t tell you how many times at 2:00 in the morning I wish I could have reached out to someone and said, “I need this, can you help me?” And so to be that person for someone else is a really great feeling.

Sarah: That’s a great story.

Aimee: Yeah, it’s a real feeling of fulfillment. Now, you won’t always get me at 2:00 in the morning, but you can leave a message and you will speak to me or my husband or someone who will take care of you. And if we can do it, we will do it. I have been known to drive to our downtown FedEx facility at 9:00 at night to ship out one order of cupcake rings because someone needs them the next day. And that person had no other way to find them but through my store.

Sarah: And you get how important that is because you’re a mom.

Aimee: Yes, Absolutely.

Sarah: You know what I love about your business is that you’re a mom helping other moms. I mean, that’s what Better Way Moms is about too. I think that’s something we provide for each other through our companies, and until you’re a mom, there are a lot of things that you don’t fully understand.

Aimee: Right. Exactly. And I hope the fact that I’m willing to go that trouble and that I understand what they want as mothers, will in turn help them to trust me with their hard earned dollars and to help me to continue to do what I do for my family. I hope it’s a fair trade off.

Sarah: Well, it sounds like it is, because people are calling and buying!

Aimee: I go out of my way to try to shop at local businesses or businesses that are owned by moms, even if they are online. My mother and father, uncles and aunts, grandmother and grandfather all owned their own businesses and I think that’s what America was built on. And I believe in supporting that. And the further we get away from that — well, I think it’s just sad.

Sarah: Absolutely. That’s why we created our whole “more money equals more freedom” section and it’s why I spend the time interviewing others, like you, who have started their own businesses. We can all do this and I think it’s important that we do.

Aimee: Yes, I completely agree.

Sarah: So, back to you. Do you have a specific product or a specific package that you love selling?

Aimee: You know, not really. I just love having the one thing that a person is looking for. I have very unique things, and what I’m really proud of is that I don’t sell anything that I don’t love. If I don’t think it’s great, then I’m not going to sell it or have it as part of my inventory. So know that when I serve people, or sell something to them, it’s something that I love too.

Maybe that’s a little bit naïve or maybe I could make more if I didn’t do that, but for me, I want to sell the things I love. I’ve had people call me for things as specific as Tom & Jerry cupcake rings, and you know what? I had them. The customer was really surprised, you know? I think they figured that the idea would be too old, and there would be no way I had them, but I did. And I had them because I liked them.

Sarah: Aimee, thank you so much for this. I hope we help a few more moms out there turn their passions into businesses too. This has been very helpful and a lot of fun!

Aimee: Me too! It’s been great.
