The Suburban Outlaw

suburban_outlaw.jpgAlright Better Way Moms! We found another fabulous mom and a great book for you! Pam Sherman, also known as The Suburban Outlaw shares some pretty funny, and very touching, articles “from the edge” – also known as the depths of suburbia and motherhood.

Pam has a collection of her articles, originally written for the Rochester Magazine over a four year period. Some of the articles will have you nodding your head in understanding, and others will provide a source of comfort as you’re left knowing that you are not the only mom on the planet who is about to lose your mind.

The Outlaw’s writing is a joy to read, it’s almost guilt inducing, like eating a big bowl of candy. You’ll find yourself picking up the book for a quick read and then sneaking off to another room while the kid are eating to finish an article. It’s like coming home – you know, to your own crazy life.

I mean, the book starts off with an article called “The Rebel Wears Sweater Sets,” how can you not love this book?

One of my favorite articles, “All Downhill from Here” had me laughing outloud. As poor Pam moved from her beloved Bethesda, MD to Rochester, her husband thought it would be a good idea to buy her a Camaro convertible. You know, a convertible in 26 degrees and massive snow drifts. She ends up in tears as her baffled husband can’t understand why this present occurs to her as absolute tortue. I actually laughed out loud.

One of the other moments that really struck a chord with me was when she explains that her mother once said, “You’ll sleep when you die.” I used to say that as well, though it was when I wanted to go dancing all night and I was trying to talk my friends into coming with me. But in this context article, Pam talks about those first few nights that our babies actually slept, and the anxiety that can actuall produce in us. It’s entirely counter-intuitive, and we’ve all gone through it. But it does appear that her mother cursed her with wrestless nights. I hope she uses those hours of sleeplessness to keep on writing. I’ve become a pretty big fan.

I found this book, with topics ranging from diets, a husband who’s slightly too happy about his relationship with the dog, her widowed mother who wants to start dating again and the annoying and confusing relationship we all have with sleep, to be a comfort. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it, and her writing brings such warmth, humor and honesty to experiences that most of us don’t talk about – but we wish we could.

I promise you, you will laugh out loud, be moved and feel completely vindicated as a mother while reading this book. Pam urges all of us to live on the EDGE™ Explore, Dream, Grow and Excite.

After reading The Suburban Outlaw, you will definitely be inspired to do all four.

Thanks for a great book Pam!
