Getting Thrifty with It

Why spend more money than you have to? What, you don't have time to clip coupons? Um, neither do we.

America’s Cheapest Family Gets You Right on the Money

Americas Cheapest Family

Boy, do they ever! Meet Steve and Annette Economides, who live in Arizona and have raised five children on an average salary Steve made while Annette stayed at home. Oh, and they have no debt.  Like none, as in paid for all their cars in cash, and paid off their first home in nine years. Baffled? Intrigued? Yeah, I was too, that’s why I started reading it.

It does not disappoint. I LOVE these people. Finally, a book that describes EXACTLY how this family did this, blow by blow. Sure, they cover their general philosophies on money and spending, but very quickly Steve and Annette get their hands dirty and dish all of their secrets to you. Every single one, from groceries to clothing to purchasing cards to paying off existing debt to teaching your kids about money. And we’re talking baby step by baby step here. It’s an intricate, detailed map of their financial how-tos, and they leave nothing to the imagination.

And thank goodness! When I completed this book, I was filled with such hope and enthusiasm. The Economides actually did it, and they continue to live this way despite their recent financial successes. Why? Because they believe in their methods, and they feel better waking up in the morning knowing that they have money in the bank. The bank does not own them. Personally, I have been on both sides of that coin and I can tell you how completely exhilarating and thrilling it is to go to sleep and wake up knowing that you’re all right financially. Not loaded (though that would be nice) and not swimming in their accumulated stuff either. Everything the Economides have has a specific function and purpose, and it all leads to savings and financial freedom. How nice does that sound?

In conclusion, I highly recommend this book. As with everything else in life, you should take what appeals to you and leave the rest. Some you ideas may not be for you, and that’s perfectly fine. But the overage message, especially in this current economic crisis, is seriously worth its weight in gold. I say bravo to the Economides (yes, that is their real name) and thank you thank you thank you for sharing!
