Jon & Kate's Announcement
As we all know, Jon and Kate have a special announcement coming. Regardless of what they end up telling us in this big “announcement,” what I’m really struck by is the difference between men and women in these situations. And I find that this case is really highlighting something we’ve all seen in other divorces or separations (because let’s be honest, the writing is on the wall, this is not going to be a "happy" announcement). I will grant that this situation is a little different from most in that there are eight children involved and this is unfolding in front of all of us while we sit on our couches and ignore our own imperfect lives for an hour each week while we watch.
And it seems pretty clear that one of these people gets to start a new life, and the other has to pick up the pieces of the life they were already living. Word has it (and I realize we can’t rely on rumors right now, but the rumor represents my point either way), that Jon is looking for his “bachelor pad” on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. These two have clearly been separated for some time, and it appears to me that Jon has been “set free,” and Kate has been left with the house and kids. This is the usual path in situations like this, the men leave and the women keep going on, but without their partners.
Now, I’m not complaining about this. I just find it interesting. And this may be exactly what Kate has always wanted and as Jon said, he’s changed, but he feels like he’s finally discovered who he is. He now has both of his ears pierced, he’s taking snowboarding trips, building motorcycles and looking for an apartment. It’s very likely that he will find someone to date, maybe even marry and he’ll move on with his life, getting to see his children in a different way, on a different schedule, but getting to see them all the same.
Sounds like a pretty good deal to me. And he seems pretty happy with it as well.
The same fate is probably not in the cards for Kate. She is up against the negative publicity, the videos of her being mean to Jon that will be replayed on YouTube over and over again, all the times she slapped (love patted) Jon, and her organized and structured way of running the house. All of this will probably get in the way of her finding someone else and falling in love again. Probably her biggest difficulty will be the fact that she has eight children living with her almost all the time. Not many men want to sign up for that when they’re dating.
It just seems really lopsided, and so unfair. I say that with the full awareness...(cont)
