Shopped Straight

I went to Kohl’s to pick up a couple pairs of jeans for Ezra — it’s almost spring/shorts weather but his current jeans just aren’t going to make it. And as most of the winter clothes are 60%-80% off, I couldn’t resist this two-for-one shirt set for him I know he’ll dig since it has both dragons and guitars on it. And other various cool designs. $7 for the pair of two shirts and $9.20 for the jeans (with a belt).
Then I was headed over to the men’s section to look for some summer shirts for myself, and I see some oh-so-many-cute girly clothes on sale! Sophie loves the frilly, flowery, and glittery stuff and I couldn’t put back this one shirt that had all three!
And it’s probably a good thing the kids weren’t with me tonight, or I’d have spent way more than the $54 I departed Kohl’s without.
I’m finally caught up on the power bill, and I actually had a tax return this year so this month hasn’t been as fraught with financial disaster as most have been. As such, I decided to put a little more effort into ‘casual’ dress shopping for Sophie and low and behold, a pink dress was on sale for fourteen dollars! And as Kohl’s special tonight, they had a whole assortment of various spring dresses similar to this for anywhere from $10-$30.
There is one complaint I have: somebody needs to introduce the metric system to the clothing industry! What the ??? Boys medium size shirts are 10-12 while girls large sizes are 7-8? Yeah right. And Sophie is in size 13 shoes so of course next we go to 1’s?! And they’re not at all uniformly sized. Some have only the S-M-L designations and some have only numbers, and some have both?
But the real story here is I really enjoyed milling around Kohl’s for quite some time tonight. I remember the days not that many decades ago when, by 9pm on a Saturday evening I’d be either on my 12th run-down of the quarter, or possibly already evading some well trouble. Tonight I spent about twp hours scouring racks of clearance clothes. What has become of me?!
While on the checkout line, a nice older lady (who had been telling me earlier where there was a rack of dresses I may have missed) came up behind me and spoke again, wanting to see what I’d decided to keep. Maybe I should have asked her where I might find a hot game of high stakes bingo later?
I wish I could tell you I’m giving it up now that I’ve had this glimpse into where my future is headed, like when they used to take the kids to prison to ‘scare them straight’ so they’d snap out of it. But I just doubt this was my last trip to Kohl’s…
